What is Massage Like?
Your massage therapy session will begin with a general health questionnaire since there are some conditions for which massage is not appropriate.
For a full body massage you will need to undress. Most people undress completely although you may choose to wear underwear. You undress in private.
You will be lying on a padded electric lift table in a warm, quite room with soft background music designed to enhance relaxation. You are covered with a sheet during the session, except for the area being massaged.
A light non-scented cream or oil will be used to lubricate the skin. Massage on normal tissue is almost always a pleasant sensation. Massage on an area of injury or chronic pain may at first cause some discomfort, which usually lessens noticeably in the first few minutes. Your massage therapist knows ways to minimize pain, and will work carefully within what feels right to you.
The session begins with gentle pressure to relax the nervous system. Gradually the pressure deepens to address more specific areas.
Most people just close their eyes and relax completely during the session.
Most sessions last for one hour. Following your massage there is a brief consultation to discuss your experience and future needs. You are encouraged to relax and drink plenty of fluids to help remove toxins released from the tissue during the massage.
